Ashtanga yoga is a type of exercise that uses breath and motion to rid the body of toxins. To teach this type of yoga, you must be a qualified instructor. Follow these steps to become an Ashtanga yoga instructor

  • Travel to Mysore, India

    Becoming an Ashtanga Yoga Instructor

  1. Step 1

    Practice Ashtanga yoga yourself. You should be proficient in Ashtanga yoga before your consider teaching anyone else. You will be a much better instructor if this type of yoga is a main point of focus in your life.

  2. Step 2

    Enroll in a local yoga training institute. Many yoga schools offer instructor classes in different types of yoga. In addition to studying the Ashtanga yoga techniques, it is helpful to become well-versed in other types of yoga as well.

  3. Step 3

    Travel to the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (AYRI) in Mysore, India. While this is not necessary to teach Ashtanga yoga prinicpals, it is required to become a certified Ashtanga yoga instructor. Most visits are at least three months and will qualify you to teach beginning Ashtanga yoga. Additional visits are required to become a master Ashtanga yoga instructor.

Tips & Warnings
  • It can take many years to master Ashtanga yoga. This is not something that is done on a whim. Be patient.
  • Many places charge a large fee and promise to make you an Ashtanga yoga instructor, but the only way to become a certified instructor is to make the journey to Mysore.
