The alternate guitar tuning CGCGCD is remarkably useful for fingerpicking. You will find that it can be used very much like DADGAD and other modal tunings for Celtic and Appalachian music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  • Tuner (optional)
  1. Step 1

Tune the 6th string down to C. Use the C on the fifth string (3rd fret) as a guide.

  2. Step 2

Tune the 5th string down to G.

  3. Step 3

Tune the 4th string down to C.

  4. Step 4

Leave the 3rd string tuned to G.

  5. Step 5

Tune the 2nd string up to C. Be very careful, as tuning up can cause strings to break.

  6. Step 6

Tune the first string down to D.

  7. Step 7

Check the tuning. This tuning is particularly sensitive as C and G overlap so often. If you hear any "beats" in the resonance, redo the tuning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use high-tension or medium-tension strings. Tuning the bass strings down, especially with light-gauge strings, will cause them to sound loose and also lead to the notes being sharp when fretted.
  • Try playing some songs by Al Petteway or Tony McManus with this tuning.
  • Don't overtighten the strings. Be careful when using alternate tunings, as your strings may break due to metal fatigue.
