Double dropped D tuning is one of the more common alternate tunings on guitar. It allows for some wonderful chord articulations with the high and low string both tuned to the same note.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  • Tuner (optional)
  1. Step 1

Tune the high E string down to D. Use the D on the B string as a guide if you don't have a tuner.

  2. Step 2

Tune the low E string down to D.

  3. Step 3

Make sure both high and low D strings are perfectly tuned as even tiny differences will be noticeable.

  4. Step 4

Check your tuning by playing a D chord. In this tuning, a D chord is simply 3rd string, 2nd fret and 2nd string, 3rd fret. Strum all 6 strings.

  5. Step 5

Retune your strings slowly as they can break due to metal fatigue. This is particularly true of the high E string when you return to standard tuning.

Tips & Warnings
  • If using a capo, you will probably have to retune when applying or removing the capo.
  • Experiment with new chords as you can create some wonderful voicings with this tuning.
