Teaching someone to tie a shoe is not easy. In the puzzle section of most toy stores, you can find practice shoes with laces that aid in teaching the skill. Tying a shoe is a tricky task that most of us do several times a day without thinking about it, so finding the words to explain the steps may be the hardest part of all.

      Prepare the laces. Before you start to tie the shoe, make sure that the laces are even. You can check for even laces by pulling up both ends perpendicular to the shoe.

      Criss-cross the laces. Cross the strings and lay them down on the ground. Bring one string under the other and tighten.

      Form a loop in one hand. Wrap opposite string around the loop once and pull that string through the loop, creating two loops. Tighten both loops.

      Stick your tongue out. Pull out the tongue of the shoe position it comfortably on the foot.

      Double knot. If you want the shoes to stayed tied, you can create a double knot. Hold both loops and criss-cross. Bring one loop through the "hole" and tighten.

  • Make a game out of shoe tying. Have a race to tie shoes, sing a song while tying shoes or use other methods to make learning fun.

  • Getting frustrated while teaching someone to tie their shoes will only hamper the learning process.
