It is very important that you stand up for your rights and the rights of those that have been tread upon. Sometimes you are picketing over a violation of rights and sometimes over an overall injustice. You can create a picket sign for any worthy cause!

Think about what it is that you are picketing. Get very clear about the reason for the picketing. Determine what it is you most want to say to both the public and to the offending parties.

Come up with clever slogans or strong messages. Write down a column of possible slogans. Circle which ones stand out the most, and commit to one that best sums up all that you need to say.

Lay your poster board on a flat, even surface.

Write down the slogan in big, bubble letters on the poster board.

Color in the slogan with either same-color paint or another color. Whichever color you choose, make sure it is something that can easily be read and seen. The poster should be big and interesting enough that one can read from a car.

Decorate the poster with ways to accentuate the slogan. If you are protesting animal exploitation, consider drawing the angry animals on the poster. You want to be careful to keep this a bit subtle. If you take this step too far, you and your poster could end up being scoffed at or taken as a joke.

Tape the picket sign to a tall, wooden stick. Alternately, you can carry the picket sign over your head. This route can get tiresome, though.
