How to Adjust Volume Using the Premiere Effects Control Panel

Making audio adjustments with Premiere Pro is not too difficult. Once you have imported video clips and placed them in a sequence, there are a couple ways you can adjust the volume, one of which is by using the Effects Control panel. Using the Effects Control panel, rather than making quick adjustments in the Timeline panel, gives you greater control for precise changes.

Instructions

    • 1

To adjust volume with the Effects Control, select the audio clip in the Timeline’s sequence by clicking on it with your mouse.

    • 2

Open the Effect Controls panel. It is located on the tab to the right of the Source Monitor Window.

    • 3

Click on the arrow to the left of “Volume” under Audio Effects to expand its options.

    • 4

Enter a numeric value directly in the level area. 0.0 is a number that is equal to the original volume of the clip before any adjustments. A value less than 0.0 will decrease volume, and a value higher than 0.0 will increase it.

    • 5

You may also expand the options for Level, by clicking on the arrow next to “Level.” Use the slider tool to increase or decrease volume by dragging it.

    • 6

Move the “current-time indicator” to an area of a clip you specifically want to adjust volume. Whenever you move the indicator, a new keyframe will be created on the audio clip. Repeat as often as you need new keyframes in the clip.

Tips & Warnings

  • A “keyframe” will automatically be entered at the beginning of the audio clip you are adjusting when you use the Effects panel to adjust volume.
