How to Have a Successful Marriage

A successful marriage is a two way street. Just like the old saying "if you want a friend you have to be one," being in a marriage is no different. Follow these easy step by step instructions and be well on your way to a successful marriage.

Instructions

    • 1

Be kind. Your spouse should be your best friend. Who wants to have a best friend who nags and complains about everything that you do? If you were to have a friend like that, you probably would not be friends for long. Your marriage will not last long either if it is built upon criticism and complaining. Be kind to your spouse and in return, your spouse will be kind to you. Before you make a complaint about something she has done, think about the situation or the circumstance that your spouse was in during the time of the infraction. Remember this: "always discuss, never fuss."

    • 2

Be romantic. To keep romance alive within your marriage, send the kids to Grandma's house and plan a date with your spouse. If you do not have the time or money to really go somewhere, cook dinner for them right at home. It is possible to go out on a date to the movies and never actually leave home, just rent a few romantic classics and pop some popcorn.

    • 3

Be spontaneous. Whenever possible, take your spouse on a weekend get away. Get aways can be fairly inexpensive if planned ahead of time. Choose a location within a short driving distance, find a nice, but inexpensive hotel or bed and breakfast and plan an activity or two that is of interest to your spouse.

    • 4

Communicate. This is more than likely the most difficult step in having a successful marriage. Talk to your spouse openly about everything. The more talking you do with one another, the better you will become at the art of communication.

    • 5

Support your spouse. Always be the backbone of your spouse. Send cards and emails just to let him know that you are thinking of him throughout the day. Help your spouse make the right choices in life whether it be in careers, education or simply what to wear to church on Sunday. Knowing that he has your support in whatever lies ahead will make all the difference in the world.
