How to Make Faux Rocks
Here's a fun and easy way to add decoration to your landscape without spending a ton of money. The process takes a little patience, but once you've made a rock or two, you'll be a master. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 parts peat moss
- 1 part portland cement
- 1 part fine sand
- Water
- Large mixing bucket
- Hand trowel or small shovel
- Forms or molds(optional)
- Concrete paint (optional)
- Spray bottle for paints (optional)
- Large sea sponge (for texture)
- Plastic for covering

Mix together peat moss, sand, cement and enough water to create a consistency of cake mix with shovel or hand trowel.

Pack mixture into a cement mold or form, or shape free form onto a smooth surface. Use sea sponge to stipple mixture in order to replicate the texture of rock.

Cover with plastic and let cure in a shaded spot for two weeks. Unmold rocks if necessary. Take of plastic and let the rock finish curing for five to seven more days.

Wash the rock thoroughly with vinegar and then with water to remove as much lime as possible from the rock. Mix cement paint to a watery consistency and fill the spray bottle. Gently spray the rock to simulate real rock.

Tips & Warnings
The curing process is very important, if you skip this step your rock will be more likely to break apart.
For an even more realistic touch, rub a mixture of peat moss and yogurt on surface of rock to encourage the growth of moss.
Wear goggles, dust mask, and gloves to avoid injury.
