How to Celebrate Graduation From Second Grade
Your 8-year old is finishing his second formal year of elementary school. What a joy -- he's on the cusp of tweendom and still a delight, without any of that sassy behavior that you know is coming. Celebrate this big day with the following.

1
Have a sleepover. Invite the friends that your child would most like to have over --- say, four or five -- for a sleepover celebration. Kids this age delight in the independence of a sleepover. Make a simple dinner of mac n' cheese, rent a movie and have the kids sleep out in the living room to commemorate the end of second grade.
-
2
Select an item related to the number two (a pair of flip flops, a set of hair clips, a pair of sunglasses) and give it as a simple second-grade graduation gift to your child.

3
Write your child a letter expressing how proud you are of her. Tell her how wonderful the year has been, and point out how far she's come during that year. Celebrate the successes of second grade -- mastering chapter books, perhaps, or beginning to perform multiplication -- and praise her for her hard work throughout the year.
-
4
Make a photo album that can serve as your child's personal yearbook of events that happened during the year -- not just in school, but also in his extracurricular activities. Include papers he has brought home and drawings he has made, as well as ticket stubs and sports photos. This can become a treasured keepsake in the years to come.

5
Select an activity related to the number three that you can engage in during the summer (a ball game to represent three strikes, a science museum for three-dimensional objects) and head out to experience it together. It's a great way to celebrate the new grade your child will be entering.
