Start reading. There are hundreds and hundreds of books written all about hunting. If there is a season for hunting it, there is a book to read about it too. Because there are so many different things to hunt, you'll need some help in narrowing down the choices to find one that suits your preferences.

Train properly with someone who is skilled and knowledgeable and preferably certified in the use of firearms if you plan to hunt with a gun. Firearm safety is a must. You will also need a good deal of practice in order to become accurate in your shooting. Of course if bow hunting is your method of choice, you will need to seek training in the proper use of a bow and arrow. In either case, seek training and continue training and practicing until your are confident that you now what you are doing. Call a local outdoor's store for information on where you can take classes.

Sign up for a hunter's safety class. Depending on your age and the state in which you live, a hunter's safety class may be mandatory. Even if you are not legally required to take this class, it is still a good idea to sign up and attend. You can never be too careful when hunting and a hunter's safety class will teach you about how to safely handle a firearm, how to protect yourself and others as you hunt as well as other important safety tips.

Learn the rules for the game you plan to hunt. There are limits to how many male and female animals you are allowed to kill, rules about using bate and many other game specific rules that you will be expected to follow. You will also need to know the dates for the official season of the game you will hunt.

Get a license. It is illegal to hunt without a license, so be sure to have one in your wallet.

Seek a mentor. If at all possible, spend time with someone else as they hunt what you want to learn to hunt. Going along with them on a hunt is the best way to prepare yourself for your own hunting. An experienced hunter can give you all sorts of tips and even more importantly, they can help you find a hunting spot.

Be sure to wear the proper attire when you hunt. Hunter's orange is worn to alert other hunters of your presence in the woods.
