How to Save on College Textbooks

College expenses add up fast. We all know that. Just when you think you're finished paying off all of your expenses, you remember that you have to buy textbooks. Don't let costly books prevent you from getting the grade you deserve.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check out the university bookstore. There are some books that aren't that expensive and the bookstore should stock all required books. If you don't want to spend the extra money to buy them new, there are always used books.
Step2
Look around at the nearby bookstores. Most likely, there are bookstores around the campus that are selling new and used books for less.
Step3
Shop online for books. You can find some great deals on new and used textbooks if you look around. Try Amazon or eBay.
Step4
Return textbooks immediately if a professor states that a book isn't needed. Sometimes there can be a change in the syllabus or a mix up of some sort. Depending on the store policy, you should get a full refund if you return it within a certain time frame.
Step5
Go on Craigslist to look for books. A lot of the time, former students are giving away their textbooks for nothing at all.
Step6
Sell your books back at the end of the semester. The moment you have no use for the book, sell it back to the bookstore. Stores will take back books for more money if you're one of the first people to sell them. If you can't sell them through the bookstore, go online and sell them.
Step7
Do a book swap. Many colleges will have some sort of book swap program that is already in place. It might not be through the university, but they do exist.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have to highlight or mark a textbook in any way, try not to. You can get more money out of a clean book.
