1
Do your research. Educate yourself about the specific cause or issue. A person with extended knowledge, or personal experience with an issue has a decided advantage when applying for a position. Learn as much as you can about the organization you are applying with, and become familiar with their mission.
-
2
Show your support for the work being done. Support the mission of the organization by organizing fundraisers or food drives, making personal donations of goods and services (when possible), referring others in the community to the organization, and just stopping by from time to time, to show your interest in what is being done in the organization.

3
Volunteer your time to the organization. Offer to help man phone lines, provide transportation for individuals receiving services, sort through, and put away in kind donations, or do any other work that may need to be completed. Being willing to volunteer for a non profit organization often puts you first in line, when a paying position opens up.

Talk with staff members and volunteers about your desire to become more involved. Ask questions about positions that might be opening. Find out about the minimum education and skills requirements. Ask to have your resume kept on file and to be notified if any jobs open up.
