Writing an essay is a complicated endeavor with a number of different but equally important steps. Your introduction and body of the essay can be great, but if you stumble when it comes to the conclusion, you essentially undermine everything that has come before it. You want to leave the reader with a positive impression, convinced that you've succeeded in what you've written.

  • Paper
  • Pen

    Writing an Essay Conclusion

  1. Step 1

    Begin the conclusion with a rephrasing of your thesis statement.

  2. Step 2

    Focus on the strongest parts of your essay and argument. Avoid rehashing the weaker aspects.

  3. Step 3

    Reiterate the main thrust of your essay. Don't add new information or raise new questions.

  4. Step 4

    Connect the conclusion to the introduction. Make sure that the argument and ideas in the two paragraphs are in agreement.

  5. Step 5

    Keep it short. The conclusion should usually be only a paragraph.

  6. Step 6

    End the conclusion with a definitive and straightforward statement.

  • Avoid simply summarizing your essay.
