1. Shop at Target or Ikea, also available online, for family room or living room chairs. Some excellent contemporary "easy" chairs are available at less than $200, in microsuede especially.

2. For dining room or desk chairs, check out the stylish Ikea collection -- but also be open to college or university auctions. Universities often sell used office furniture -- chairs and desks -- at a discount price. Look in your local classified ads for details, or contact the university.

3. Take a look at Craigslist. The pre-owned chairs you seek may be available right in your town and this may prove more efficient than garage sale-hopping, especially when looking for contemporary furniture, or Italian furniture, for instance. But estate and garage sales are always an option if you've got time. Don't forget antique or consignment stores; you may get a deal.

4. Try Ebay for discounts on Ikea, Target and other items. However, shipping can be prohibitive -- as opposed to buying from the big stores themselves. If you live in a large metropolitan area, however, you may get lucky and see that the chair or set of chairs is available for pick up.

5. Get creative. Artist types may wish to comb thrift stores or garage sales for old wooden chairs and repaint them in cheerful layers of color and design. These can work nicely for children's rooms, nooks or playrooms.
