Long hair can be a burden sometimes, especially when you run out of things to do with it. However, there are several different options for pulling your hair off your face in ways that look as if they required a lot of effort, but actually entailed little work at all. One option is to tie your hair in a square knot. This can be done by following a few simple steps.

How to Tie Hair in a Square Knot

  1. Step 1

Grow your hair. Your hair must be long enough that you can tie it into a square knot and still be able to get the knot out when you are done. Shoulder-length or longer hair is preferred for this hairstyle.

  2. Step 2

Make a ponytail. You can pull your hair back into a ponytail at any point on your head that is comfortable for you. But the lower the ponytail, the easier it will be to make into a square-knot hairstyle.

  3. Step 3

Create two sections of hair. Divide the hair in your ponytail down the middle into two thick sections. Hold onto each section with one of your hands.

  4. Step 4

Twist your hair. Twist the section in your right hand under the section in your left, until the two sections are criss-crossed.

  5. Step 5

Loop the sections. Reach underneath through the opening between the two sections, and pull the right section tightly through the opening.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the loop. Loop the sections around each other in the same way, but this time, go left-over-right to finish the square knot. Pull tightly.

  7. Step 7

Secure the knot. Use bobby pins or hair spray to secure any of the stray pieces of hair that slipped free of the square knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also add a series of square knots to your hair for a more dramatic effect.
  • Make sure to brush your hair before you put the square knot into it. Messy hair will be harder to knot ,and the hairstyle will be much more difficult and painful to take down.
