How to Fix a Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals have become a necessity for quick and easy kitchen cleanup. But when they malfunction, the result can be a big mess and even prevent you from using your kitchen sink. Resetting the unit or unclogging the jammed blades typically solves most garbage disposal problems. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Unplug the garbage disposal or turn off the circuit breaker that supplies power to the garbage disposal.
-
2
Press the reset button all the way in. The reset button is usually a small recessed button on the bottom of the disposal. Occasionally, the reset button is on the side of the unit.
-
-
3
Supply power to the garbage disposal by plugging in the unit or turning on the circuit breaker. Test for proper function. If the garbage disposal continues to malfunction, disconnect power from the unit again and continue to the next step.
-
4
Use an Allen wrench to turn the socket in the center of the bottom of the garbage disposal back and forth to loosen. When loose, turn the wrench one full turn counterclockwise. This turns the blades counterclockwise to loosen any jams.

5
Insert a pair of tongs into the drain and remove any loosened debris.

6
Supply power to the garbage disposal by plugging in the unit or turning on the circuit breaker. Test for proper function. If the garbage disposal continues to malfunction, you might have an electrical problem or the motor might be burned out. Consult a professional or replace the unit.

Tips & Warnings
Most garbage disposals come with a tool that fits into the socket in the bottom of the unit to clear jams. If you have misplaced this tool, you can typically use an Allen wrench.
If your garbage disposal does not have a socket on the bottom to manual clear jams, try inserting a broom handle into the drain and using it as leverage to turn the blades counterclockwise until the jam is cleared.
Never attempt to repair a garbage disposal without first unplugging the unit or turning off the electrical supply to the device.
Never insert your unprotected hand into the garbage disposal. If you must use your hand to remove debris, unplug the unit or turn off the appropriate circuit breaker, and wear gloves to protect your hand from the sharp blades.
