Things You'll Need:
- Money
- Car magazines
- Car pricing handbook
-
Step 1
Know what kind of car you are looking for. There are many different types of vehicles to choose from. Consider whether you want an SUV, car, truck or even a minivan. You may also choose from new cars or used cars. If the color of the vehicle is an important factor, narrow your options down to the colors you are most interested in. The cylinder type may also be important to you. Do you want a 4-cylinder car, or something with more horsepower?
-
Step 2
Browse car magazines. There are many car magazines available for sale and for free that can offer ideas of what car may best suit you. Look through these magazines and check off cars that fit the criteria you are looking to satisfy.
-
Step 3
Price the car using a car pricing handbook. It is highly recommended to consult a car pricing handbook, especially when you are buying a used vehicle. You do not want to overpay for a vehicle. Using a guidebook will help you understand how much the car is worth versus how much is being asked for it.
-
Step 4
Search local dealerships and the internet. Once you have narrowed down your intended car purchase and have done your homework on the vehicle, it is time to start shopping. Visit the dealership(s) you select to discuss purchasing the car. Be sure to get a good deal. Many salespeople try to haggle with the customer, but if you are knowledgeable on your car facts, getting what you deserve will not be a problem. Make it clear that you know what you are talking about.

Step 5
Read the contract thouroughly. If you do not know what you are signing, DO NOT sign it until it is explained in full. Read all fine print, and do not agree to anything you do not want.
