Things You'll Need:
- Determination
- Speed
- Dribbling skills
- Shooting skills
- Hustle

Step 1
Begin practicing early and know what your coach looks for. Even before you reach high school, you should pay attention to the team. Go to the high school games and watch what the coach and how he reacts to good plays and poor ones. Every coach has pet peeves, and things he looks for in a player. Some coaches put a higher premium on hustle than they do on ability. Know what your coach is going to want, and begin practicing that skill before you ever get to high school.

Step 2
Excel in the classroom. There is a premium on smart basketball players in high school. A coach will look much more highly on an honor roll tryout than one who is barely getting by. Be a great student and your chances double right away.
-
Step 3
Focus on being excellent at the basics of basketball. Knowing how to throw a proper chest pass is a great example. Being able to make free throws is another. The eye-catching, ooh-and-ahh plays mean nothing if you can't master the fundamentals.
-
Step 4
Hustle harder than the next guy trying out. Basketball tryouts are there to exhibit skill, but also to judge who wants to make the team and who is willing to work. If you are lazy, you better be the most talented player around or you can forget it. Some coaches will not play a guy that is lazy no matter how good they are. Be the man willing to go that extra mile.
-
Step 5
Learn the coach's plays before you try out. High school basketball tryouts are physical and mental. If you are able to run the offense smoothly, and know where to be on the court at all times, you are well on your way to making your high school basketball team. This is the one thing that high school coaches struggle with the most. Teaching the team the play book. Learn it before you even try out, and get a leg up on the competition.
-
Step 6
Scout your competition. Any warrior knows his opponent as well as he knows himself. If you are a guard, and the team already has a starting guard and backup from last year, then maybe you should look at trying to play forward. If the team is filled with point guards, perhaps you should focus on becoming a shooting guard. Maybe you think you are good enough to beat them out. The point is, make sure you know who they are and how you plan to beat them.
