Let your creativity soar and refuse to be held back by makeup rules! Whether used only on the weekends or as ideas for a costume party, these tips give your makeup a new dimension you won't see on most other faces. Try each one by itself or combine a few at your leisure.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stick-on decals and rhinestones
  • Small fake tattoos
  • Liquid eyeliner
  • Highly pigmented and brightly colored makeup pencils
  • Glitter and shimmer
  • Bold, daring and unusual colors in your makeup kit
  • False eyelashes in various lengths and styles
  1. Step 1

Create patterns with stick-on decals and rhinestones. Places you can experiment with these are on your cheek, high up on your cheekbone, on your temple and on your forehead. One of singer Alicia Keys' most famous looks involved sparkly stones glued to her eyelids in place of eyeshadow.

  2. Step 2

Transfer a fake tattoo onto your cheek for the day.

  3. Step 3

Draw. Perhaps you can extend your liquid eyeliner past the outer corner of your eye and create little swirls. You can also artfully sketch your favorite symbol or animal or a pretty flower on your cheek using highly pigmented and brightly colored makeup pencils.

  4. Step 4

Sparkle. Be whimsical by applying glitter or shimmer to areas they normally wouldn't be. Try your lips, your collarbone and the outer corners of your eyes. For a more subtle effect, stick with shimmer. Glitter is chunkier and cheaper looking, but it certainly helps if you are going for a 1970s disco diva look.

  5. Step 5

Add bold and daring colors to your makeup palette. Wear them in unconventional ways. Gold lipstick, cobalt blue liquid eyeliner and emerald green mascara are but a few examples of products you can use to amplify your look.

  6. Step 6

Find fake eyelashes that suit your style and the degree of playfulness you are comfortable incorporating into your look. False lashes come in different lengths, not all of them meant to be natural. Some are even colored or glitter-coated.

  7. Step 7

Study color combinations to create attractive eye makeup looks that are unpredictable but attractive.

  8. Step 8

Take inspiration from certain makeup looks and make them your own. You can modify a punk, goth, rocker or even princess look. Check out different periods in history to see if there are particular looks you want to modify or adapt as your own.

  9. Step 9

Dot on a beauty mark. Marilyn Monroe enhanced hers. Cindy Crawford went on to supermodel stardom with her trademark mole. You may not have one, but you can fake it. Your trusty black liquid eyeliner should do the trick. There are even companies which sell little stickers made for this very purpose!

Tips & Warnings
  • The more unconventional your style is, the more you can get away with. On the other hand, if you like keeping your makeup more traditional but want a change, you can still do so in a subtle way. For example, instead of replacing your usual pink lipstick with purple, you can simply top it off with a shimmery lip gloss that you've never tried before.
  • Always do a patch test on your skin before using glue for attaching the decals and rhinestones. Make sure the kind you use is skin-friendly!
