Bulb flowers benefit from deadheading
Bulb flowers benefit from deadheading

Deadheading is the removal of old or spent flowers so the plant has a chance to redirect its energy to the plant instead of the bulb. Tulips, narcissus and hyacinth flowers all benefit from regular deadheading.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tulip plants
  • Hyacinth plants
  • Narcissus plants
  • Fingers for removing flowers
  • Garden shears if needed
  • Gloves if needed
  1. Step 1

Identify those blooms that need removing.

  2. Step 2

For tulips, cut at the base of the flower stem. Cutting before the flower actually is spent will leave you with beautiful blooms for the house and will promote more flowering.

  3. Step 3

Narcissus can be cut as the flower blooms for placing indoors in a vase for display. Use shears for this flower for clean cuts.

  4. Step 4

For hyacinth, pinch the flowers at the stem base.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use garden shears if you find them to be easier for you.
  • If you are doing lots of flowers, gloves will protect your hands.
