A diesel hybrid promises increased fuel efficiency, less emissions and the versatility of an electric motor and diesel engine combined. Volkswagen recently unveiled its prototype concept car, the VW Golf TDI Hybrid. It's expected to be available in European markets by the end of 2008, but there's no word on when it would appear in the U.S. Since turbo diesel engines are more effective than gasoline-powered engines, and the hybrid electric reduces consumption of fuel, buying a diesel hybrid makes sense for many.

From Quick Guide: Hybrid Vehicles
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Live in Europe. Volkswagen has not seen a date or even promised to bring their hybrid diesel to the United States; however, it was introduced in Europe and will be available for sale there in the coming months.

  2. Step 2

Contact Volkswagen and request that the diesel hybrid golf be offered for sale in the United States, or Canada, or wherever you live. Car manufacturers take public requests very seriously as they can be an indication of the potential market.

  3. Step 3

Travel to Europe and purchase a diesel hybrid to be shipped back to America. If you are deployed to Germany or elsewhere with the United States Army, you can have the vehicle shipped home with you after your tour is up.

  4. Step 4

Save up and keep researching. Since you likely can't purchase a diesel hybrid right away, begin setting aside the funds and keep an eye on current vehicle needs. It's possible that Toyota and Honda, leaders in the hybrid sector, will roll out a diesel hybrid before Volkswagen gets the VW diesel hybrid Golf on the shelves near you.
