To buy a Toyota hybrid new, you may need to get on a waiting list at your local dealer. As fuel prices skyrocket, those with long commutes and frequent travelers turn to more economical means of transportation. The demand for hybrid vehicles -- often the Toyota hybrid Prius in particular -- has increased greatly in recent months. Here's how to buy a Toyota Hybrid.

From Quick Guide: Hybrid Vehicles
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your local or regional Toyota dealerships to find out if they have any new or used hybrid cars in stock. Most likely, they won't, so ask to be put on the waiting list. In some places, you'll be on the waiting list for six months before a vehicle gets to you.

  2. Step 2

Learn the makes and prices of available Toyota hybrids. The basic Prius is about $21,500 while the Touring is $23,770. They both get 48 mpg highway and 45 mpg city. Priced at $25,650, the Toyota hybrid Camry gets 33/34 mpg.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the color, trim package and other options. There are several packages that you can add to your vehicle that include upgraded audio features, heated side mirrors, cruise control, better lights and navigation systems.

  4. Step 4

Look for a used Toyota hybrid through auto classifieds, online and at independent car dealers if you don't want to wait for the waiting list to come to you. Realize that the value of used Toyota hybrids has increased just as quickly and dramatically as SUVs and large trucks have declined in value, so you may not get a great deal, but you'll likely get better gas mileage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider driving a used Toyota hybrid while you're on the waiting list for a new one; you can then sell the used one for about what it cost you -- or perhaps more if trends continue.
