Step 1
Begin working toward the goal of making your high school football team early. Don't wait until the day of tryouts to pick up a football and expect to make it. You need to prepare early and often. If you can, start working on basic football skills as young as possible. How to throw, catch, kick, and tackle are skills that take years to become good at, and the earlier you start the better.
-
Step 2
Learn about the basics of the game and be great at them. If you do not understand the game of football, it will be very hard to make the team. You must know the rules and be good at the simple parts, such as catching and throwing the ball. At a minimum, you will need to understand how the game is played. Study hard.
-
Step 3
Teach yourself about your high school football team and its history. If you are familiar with what the coaching staff wants, and work hard to be able to give them those things, then you are on your way to making the team. Find out what makes your coach happy and provide it.
-
Step 4
Assess your own skills honestly. If you are only 5 feet tall, and can not throw a football, then it does not make sense to try out for the quarterback position. This seems obvious, but people do it all the time. Take an honest look at your skills and physical attributes, and ask where you would fit the best. Where can I excel?
-
Step 5
Embrace the game and live it during the season and offseason. Many players give a half-hearted effort, and this is where you can make your mark. Hustle everywhere you go. If you are going for a water break, hustle to the table. Never lose a race because of lack of effort. If you give 110 percent, then you will be one step closer to making your high school football team.
-
Step 6
Excel in your studies, and never put football above them. No matter what anyone says, a smart football player will be picked over a dumb one most of the time. If you are a great student, then it shows you can learn and are disciplined in what is important. This is a very attractive quality to high school football coaches.
