A robbery is one of the most dangerous and scary experiences that one could encounter. When a robbery happens, it is vital that we keep our nerves about us and remain calm. Here is how to stay calm during a robbery.
Avoid looking directly into the robber's eyes. This can cause panic in yourself as well as the robber. If the robber is not in disguise, they will feel threatened by this as they will realize that you can identify them. Look at their torso and no higher if you can help it.
Step2
Remember that most robberies are hit and run. The robber wants to get out of there as fast as you do. Do everything you are told quickly and efficiently. This will help him to get out quickly and end the robbery.
Step3
Treat a robber as you would a customer if they were upset. Be polite and apologetic regardless of the robber's expectations. You are not trying to do anything here but get rid of them.
Step4
Make mental notes about what the robber looks like. Approximate height, weight and race are important as are clothes and distinguishing marks. This will also busy your mind to help keep you calm. Observe them cautiously and quickly, however, and never fix your gaze on them for more than a couple seconds at a time.
Step5
Resist the urge to fight or run as this will anger the robber and possibly heighten the situation. You should only attempt this if you are certain that you are going to be harmed. Keeping your head calm and in the situation will help you to judge when this could be necessary.
Step6
Trip the silent alarm only when it is absolutely safe to do so without being seen. If you are not sure, do not risk it.
