How to Win in the "Runescape" Duel Arena
The Runescape Duel Arena is a place in the city of Al Kharid where you can battle other Runescape players. The great thing about the duel arena is that if you die, you don't lose anything you haven't staked in the duel. Unfortunately, dying in the duel arena is very easy. Winning is a little trickier.

1
Develop your character's fighting skills. Most of the people who fight in the arena are level 25 or above. You can develop your character's fighting skills by fighting the various "monsters" which are stationed all around the game. Be sure to click the crossed swords icon in your control panel to see your fighting options. While you fight monsters, you can switch your mode of attack. The first square, in the upper left corner, will build your attack skills. The next two squares, in the upper right and lower left, will build your strength. The last square in the lower right will build your defense skills. These will look different based on which weapon you are carrying.

2
Use magic in the arena as well, so make sure your character's magic skills are up to par. Magic trumps melee in the duel arena, so you may want to become a mage and challenge someone who is skilled in close combat. However, watch out. Ranged combat trumps magic, so never challenge somebody who is skilled in the bow unless you have similar ranged skills, or are also skilled in melee combat. For best results, make sure you have all three skills before stepping into the duel arena. If you do choose magic as a combat choice, make sure you have plenty of runes before entering the arena.

3
Find people to challenge. A good place to find dueling partners is in the hospital to the north of the duel arena. Other places include the gate entrance and the catwalk directly above the arena.
-
4
Carry multiple weapons into the arena. Make sure that you have both melee and ranged weapons, and also be sure that you have a wide range of options on how to use your weapon. Certain weapons can stab, chop, slash, and do other nasty things to your opponent. Others can't. So you might want to reconsider taking a battle axe into the arena, and take a scimitar or sword instead.
-
5
Choose your armor and shield wisely. Certain types of armor in Runescape protect only against certain types of attacks. For example, chainmail doesn't protect well against magic or stabbing attacks. Also, certain types of armor can interfere certain types of attack such as casting magic spells. Check out the Runescape Wiki for some excellent tips about armor. Also, keep in mind that in Runescape armor is very expensive. So devote some time to making money before you consider getting into serious combat in the Duel Arena.

6
Mouse over your potential opponent before making or accepting a challenge. You will see their level, highlighted either in green, gold, orange or red. The color the character's level appears in shows your chances of winning. Check your own combat level in your combat menu to see if you could possibly beat them. Even if your level is higher, you can still lose. However, if you're just starting out, be sure to offer or accept only friendly duels. Staked duels require that you put up something of value, which you will lose if you lose the duel. When you begin staking, never stake anything that you're not willing to lose.
-
7
Select rules of combat before entering the duel arena. If you want to restrict the duel to melee combat, for example, select no ranged and no magic. If you want to prevent your opponent from healing during combat, select no food and no drink. Other rules include no forfeit, no prayer, no movement, obstacles and no special attacks. Again, choose wisely. Don't apply special rules to a duel for no good reason.
-
8
Have fun! Remember, the point of the duel arena is to have a good time. You will begin to win matches sooner or later. In the meantime, do whatever it takes to enjoy yourself in the arena, and don't worry too much about winning or losing.
