Apply and obtain a work permit before leaving for England. Consider obtaining a work permit by going through a company that does business with England and allows for their employees to work overseas.

Obtaining a work permit through an internship is another way to help with being able to study abroad, earn college credit, and have the opportunity to work.

Another way to obtain a work permit for Nationals that are from a count of the EEA (European Economic Area), also those that are from the countries of Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein can work in England without a work permit and they would also have the same rights as an English employee.

Obtaining a work permit through the GATS program is an additional way to work in England. which is the General Agreement on Trade in Services helps employees that are with companies that are based outside the European Union to work in England through contracting any service they have through the employers by a company that is based in England.

Obtaining a passport is needed as this is useful in identifying yourself, and can be used to help you rent an apartment or flat. It is also helpful for opening a bank account and going to an employment agencies.

Obtain a driver's license, which can be used to exchange for a U.K. license if your country is a member of the European Union. U.S. citizens are legally allowed to drive in England up to 12 months and if you know that your stay will last longer than 12 months then you will need to take a written and driving exam. All others will need to apply for a license and take the appropriate exams.

Apply for a National Insurance Number card, which is a health insurance card for health care. This is good to have when you are in England.

on 9/27/2008 Actually a National Insurance card has nothing to do with healthcare. Your national insurance card is the equivalent of a US Social Security card/number to monitor your contributions. Healthcare in the UK is provided under the NHS, although foreigners should check into whether or not they are eligible for free NHS care.
