The portable aspect of the plunge router as well as the variety of bits available make it a handy addition to your workbench. As opposed to fixed-base routers that you have to pass the wood through, plunge routers are hand-held tools you can use on large projects that are in a vise or clamped to a flat surface

Instructions on Using a Plunge Router

  1. Step 1

Read the owners manual, and take the time to figure out how to use a plunge router before tackling a full-sized project. Make some practice runs on plain wood stock to test out the various accessories.

  2. Step 2

Put safety first. Make sure the bit is not touching the wood when you turn on the router, as many have an active switch and you don’t want to mar the wood or cause yourself injury.

  3. Step 3

Experiment with the depth of your cut by clamping down a piece of wood stock and making a few test passes. As you learn how to use your plunge router, you can finish the edges of the wood, cut grooves and make designs ranging from simple to more elaborate.

  4. Step 4

Utilize your plunge router for jobs such as cutting recesses for hardware. When removal of wood to a depth exceeding 1/8 of an inch is required, use the progressive depth stops to break the job down into 3 or 4 passes. This reduces the strain on your router as well as minimizing chipping or tear out

  5. Step 5

Enjoy your new tool; once you learn how to use your plunge router, you will find more and more ways to include it in your upcoming projects!
