Picking an exfoliating face mask can be time consuming and confusing. There are so many exfoliating face masks out there that claim to be the next miracle. Picking an exfoliating face mask can also cause you to waste a lot of money if you do not know which mask to pick! Picking the wrong exfoliating face mask can also do the worst of all, irritate your skin! There are two major types of exfoliating masks, chemical and manual. Manual masks are the scrubs that your rub on your face to exfoliate the dead skin cells. Chemical masks can actually be more gentle than manual masks, do not let the name trick you. Well picking the right exfoliating face mask still comes down to trial and error, you can at least start in the right direction by following a few of these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Exfoliating face mask
  • 15 minutes, more or less

    Exfoliate, Renew, and Resurface!

  1. Step 1

Look for masks that are the right skin type for your skin, either oily, dry, or combo. Use two different masks if you have combo skin. Pick an oily skin mask for oily parts and a dry skin mask for the dry parts of your face. Use a clay mask for oily skin, kaolin clay works well. Clear up your acne with a sulfur based clay mask. Use a moisturizing exfoliating mask for dry skin and apply moisturizer afterwards.

  2. Step 2

Figure out what you want to do for your skin. Pick an Beta Hydroxy Acid mask to deeply exfoliate your pores. Remove blackheads and whiteheads with an Beta Hydroxy Acid mask.

  3. Step 3

Use an Alpha Hydroxy Acid exfoliating mask to erase acne pigmentation marks, sun spots, and to just help exfoliate the top layer of your skin. Try an Alpha Hydroxy Acid mask for your acne, if Beta Hydroxy Acid (salicylic acid) does not work for you. Make your skin radiant with an Alpha Hydroxy Acid mask too.

  4. Step 4

Choose a fruit enzyme exfoliating mask to gently dissolve dead surface skin cells. Use a fruit enzyme mask if you want the benefits of an Alpha Hydroxy mask, but want something more gentle.

  5. Step 5

Look for pH balanced exfoliating masks, especially when it comes to Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Beta Hydroxy Acid masks. Make sure that the exfoliating masks have a pH of 3.5 to 4.5, otherwise the mask may irritate your skin or not work to its' full potential.

  6. Step 6

Use a manual exfoliating scrub mask if your skin likes it. Pick a scrub with tiny grains. Make sure the scrub particles are not sharp. Gently massage your face with the scrub.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your masks are at the correct pH or they will not be effective
  • Apply a thin layer with most exfoliating masks
  • Use an exfoliating mask once a week or less depending on your skin's reaction
  • Exfoliating acid masks may tingle and slightly sting, which means it is working.
  • Be gentle with your face
  • Read the directions before using all exfoliating masks
  • Stop using exfoliating acids masks if you experience prolong stinging or redness
