How to Change the Registered Name on a Windows Pc

If for any reason you need to change the registered owner in Windows, you can do so through the registry editor. When you change the registered name, make sure that, if you are not the registered owner of the computer, that it is okay for you to do this. This process is meant to be used when giving a computer from one owner to another. Changing the user name also allows users to install programs to the newly registered owner.

      Click on the "Start" button, then click on the "Run" button.

      Type "regedit" into the text field, and then click "OK." This will open up the Registry Editor, where the file is located.

      Go to "My Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows NT > CurrentVersion." On the right side of the window, you will see a list of files located in that folder.

      Double-click on "RegisteredOwner" and a window (Edit String) will pop up. Under the text area for "Value data," type in the name that you want the computer to be registered to. When you are done, click "OK" and exit out of the Registry Editor.

  • While this is a very simple task to perform, you must be very careful when editing anything in the Registry Editor. Certain files, when changed, can affect the entire performance and stability of the system. Make sure that you edit carefully and be not to change any values that you are not familiar with.
