Stenciling on fabric is an interesting way to create quilts that have themes or make a statement. For example if you chose a fabric with a harvest theme or color scheme you might create a wheat motif quilt square using stencils and fabric paint. Before a stenciled quilt piece is added to a quilt or quilted wall hanging a quilter traditionally hand quilts the block. Choosing to take the process an additional step helps put the finishing touches on your design and adds dimension. Adding detail with fabric markers to your stencil design is a quicker option that hand stitching a finish. Stenciling on fabric creates an applique look without using a single stitch. Embellishing with markers does the same.

  1. Step 1

To create a hand quilted look on the stenciled fabric select a thin fabric marker in a matching or contrasting color depending on the desired effect. Carefully create dashed lines around the outside of the design about a 1/16th of an inch. Practice on a scrap piece of fabric before beginning. It is wise to create extra stenciled piece in case of error in marking. Create the dashes in about 1/16th of inch increments.
