BUNAC is a U.S. based non-profit that offers work and travel abroad programs in Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to volunteer programs in South Africa, Peru and Cambodia. For the work abroad programs, BUNAC facilitates a work visa for travelers and the affiliate office in that country, then serves as a landing base for participants upon arrival, supporting travelers in finding work, housing and making travel arrangements. Volunteer opportunities are more pre-planned programs, with program fees covering food and accommodation costs for the duration of the trip. Program fees do not cover plane tickets for either work or volunteer abroad programs.

To apply, participants must prove current university status and provide references, completed application, roundtrip plane flight and a $290 program fee, paid to BUNAC by cashier’s check or money order. Basic insurance is provided through the Blue Card.

Apply to the Work Abroad in Ireland program for a four month visa by proving current university status, providing references and a completed application, confirmation of a purchased roundtrip plane flight to Dublin, purchased insurance and a $400 program fee, paid to BUNAC by cashier’s check or money order. A Britain-Ireland combination visa is also available, for a total of 10 months and a cost of $590.

  3. Step 3

Apply to the Work Abroad in Canada program for a six-month visa through BUNAC. The Canadian affiliate is called SWAP, or Student Work Abroad Program. To apply, participants must prove current university status, provide references and a completed application, purchased insurance, proof of at least $700 in U.S. personal funds from a bank and a $250 program fee, paid to BUNAC by cashier’s check or money order.

To apply to the New Zealand program, you must be 18 to 35 years old and can obtain a visa for 12 months. You can also apply for a combination Australia-New Zealand visa, which lasts the full duration of each, for an added total fee.

  7. Step 2

Complete a written first part of an application for both programs, which includes program fees, $595 for Australia and $495 for New Zealand, made out in cashier checks or money orders.

  8. Step 3

After submitting part one, apply for part two, or your visa. You will need to supply passport information, proof of funds (at least $1,000), proof of flights with entry and exit confirmation and travel insurance. You will be subject to a criminal background check.

  10. For Volunteers

  11. Step 1

Select from volunteer programs in Peru, South Africa and Cambodia, ranging from five to 17 weeks. First, you need to choose a month you would like to travel and your program, and BUNAC will specify the date the trip leaves that month. These vary.

  12. Step 2

Pay $385 to BUNAC as a flat fee for all three of the programs, made in cashier's checks or money orders when initial application is processed.

  13. Step 3

Pay additional fees, which total roughly $1500 for South Africa, where you stay with a host family for five to 17 weeks. The Cambodia program, where you stay in a hostel for roughly two months, and the Peru program, where you stay with a host family for one to two months, both total roughly $1300. Plane flight is not included, but food, accommodation and transportation are.
