If your washing machine isn't filling with water properly during the fill cycle, you may need to replace the washing machine mixer valve. This valve is located on the back of the machine. With the proper tools, you should be able to do this yourself. If problems persist, contact a plumber to see if another problem exists.

How to Change a Washing Machine Mixer Valve

  1. Step 1

Unplug your washing machine. Shut off the water supply to the machine.

  2. Step 2

Move the washing machine away from the wall so you have enough room to work. Clear away any debris or dust to create a safe workspace.

  3. Step 3

Place a small water bucket under the hot and cold hoses. Use pliers to detach the cold water supply hose. It should be marked with a 'C' and is usually located on top of the hot water supply hose. Any water in the hose will be caught by the water bucket.

  4. Step 4

Remove the hot water supply hose. Mark this hose with a piece of duct tape so you will put the hoses back in their proper positions later on.

  5. Step 5

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the control panel at the front of the machine. Push the control panel up so you can gain access to the wire harness connector.

  6. Step 6

Detach the wire harness connector by pulling on it. The wire harness connector is attached to a bunch of brightly colored wires.

  7. Step 7

Detach the control panel from the rest of the washing machine using a screwdriver. Pry the two metal clips located on each side and tilt the front of the machine forward.

  8. Step 8

Remove remaining wire harness connectors and the spring clamp that holds the water hose in place. Disconnect the hose from the mixer valve.

  9. Step 9

Unscrew two nuts that are holding the mixer valve in place. You should be able to remove the mixer valve.

  10. Step 10

Replace with a new valve and reconnect wire harness connectors, clamps and hoses so you can use your washing machine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Labeling hoses and wire connectors with tape will help you remember where they go when reconnecting them after replacing the valve.
  • Always unplug appliances before replacing parts.
