How to Use a Shovel and Sand to De-Ice Sidewalk
Depending on where you live, you may or may not encounter extreme winter weather conditions. If you’re from a part of the country where the weather dips below freezing, you’ve most likely encountered your fair share of slippery sidewalks. Surprisingly, it can be quite easy and far from costly to remedy the slickness of the path. All you need is a couple of items you’ve probably already got in your garage and a little time to spare. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a shovel to remove any snow that currently covers the sidewalk path--to reveal any icy patches or strips.
-
2
If the ice is thin enough, you can use the edge of your shovel to chip it away. Simply bring the edge of the shovel down with some force onto the outside edge of the ice, moving inward as it cracks. After you’ve finished breaking apart the ice, shovel the chunks off to the side and out of the way of traffic.

3
If you’re unable to chip the ice away, sprinkle sand on any remaining slick patches or strips by pouring it slowly onto the ice, making sure to cover the area entirely.
-
4
Use your foot to spread the sand that you’ve just poured on the ground until it is evenly covers the ice.
-
5
Once you’ve spread out the sand, sprinkle additional amounts in any area that is lacking.
