How to Change the Sounds on Windows Xp

Have you ever wanted to change the default sounds your Windows system plays? Every event or program in Windows has a default sound applied to it. You can change these sounds so that, when you do something like emptying the recycle bin, you hear a clip of your favorite song instead of a crumpling-paper sound.

    How to Change Default Sounds in Windows

  1. Step 1

    Open your Start menu.

  2. Step 2

    Go to Control Panel and select the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices category.

  3. Step 3

    Under the "Pick a Task" heading, click "Change the Sound Scheme." This will open the Sounds and Audio Device Properties window. In this window, there is a list of all the sounds Windows plays.

  4. Step 4

    Under "Program Events," select the event whose sound you would like to change. Beneath the list, you will see a pulldown menu titled "Sounds." This shows you which sound is currently applied to that event.

  5. Step 5

    Click the Browse button next to the pulldown menu. A new window will pop up where you can find any *WAV file on your computer that you wish to apply.

  6. Step 6

    Select the *WAV file you like and click OK.

  7. Step 7

    Click the Apply button, then the OK button, and you're finished!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that the sound applied can be anything you want it to be, but it must be in WAV format.
