Make custom shelving for your garage. Conform the space in your garage to better work for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • An exposed garage wall with studs to mount shelves
  • Nails (1" to 1 1/2")
  • Hammer
  • Glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Wood planks (as many as you want to build with)
  • Wood boards for the shelves (sized to fit garage corner)
Step1
Find a corner of the garage that has the space you need for a storage shelf. You should locate a corner where the studs in the wall are visible, allowing you to build one additional support for the shelves.
Step2
Cut the vertical post, front support and side wooden beams set parallel from wall that will support the shelves.
Step3
Take the vertical post and mark lines on it for the short boards or side wooden beams to be placed (at what ever height is desirable).
Step4
Lay the vertical post on a workbench or strong table. Line up one short board or side wooden beam so that the bottom of the beam is aligned with the pencil marking. Hammer four nails into the short board or side wooden beam and the vertical post. You should have a 90 degree L-shape for each board.
Step5
Use clamps to hold the smaller boards in place to the stud on the wall. Be careful when mounting the post’s side wooden beams to the studs on the garage wall. You must avoid electrical wires when assembling your storage shelf. Hammer about four nails into the smaller boards of the post to the stud on the wall of the garage.
Step6
Clamp horizontal boards in place to form the front shelf horizontal supports, and ensure that the boards are level/ parallel before nailing the boards.
Step7
Nail the horizontal side supports to the wall, and the horizontal back supports to the wall. Install the back cleat by clamping the ends to the other supports, then nail the assembly to the wall.
Step8
Install the shelve boards. Hammer nails to the support boards to secure the shelves. 1 inch nails or 1 and a half inch nails should suffice, as long as the framing is pierced about an inch deep.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drilling holes in the wood before you insert nails can save your boards from cracking. Don’t drill the holes too wide. Make sure you have nails that are slightly bigger than the holes you drill.
  • Locate wires in the walls of your garage before you decide on a storage shelf location.
