Things You'll Need:
- Deck of cards

Step 1
Practice the mechanic’s grip on a deck of cards. This technique has more to do with handling cards as you deal them rather than how you play them. The mechanic’s grip positions the cards face down in your palm with your palm facing up. Your pinky, ring and middle fingers should be on one length side of the cards, with your pointer finger over the outer end, and your thumb lying flatly across the other length side. The grip is very loose to enable swift card movement.
-
Step 2
Deal with the thumb and forefinger of your other hand. The cards should be held in the hand that you favor, and the other hand will do the dealing. Avoid being too slow by dealing with the least hand contact possible. Be careful not to accidentally flip the cards over as you deal though.
-
Step 3
Organize your hand. If you are a novice to intermediate player or just playing with some friends, it’s okay to organize your hand by suit or number. However, if you find yourself in a very serious competitive match, how you order your cards can give very perceptive players a leg-up in the match. In these situations, it’s advisable to order your cards oddly or do not order them at all.
-
Step 4
Be mindful of who can see your cards. To put it another way, make sure only you can see your cards. Keep the cards tight and angled downward toward your body if you are permitted to hold them. In casinos the player is never allowed to hold cards to prevent cheating. So use your thumb to lift the edges of your cards as they lay face down on the table.
-
Step 5
Refrain from bending the cards. This is if you are allowed to hold them. It may be tempting while you are sorting or protecting your cards to bend them. Do not do this. Not only does it ruin the cards, but it also may damage your relationship with the card owner.
