Wooden cooking utensils are a staple in many kitchens. They are safe for non-stick coatings, don't transfer heat, and last for many years. Unfortunately, wooden utensils can also harbor germs. With a few simple steps, you can keep your utensils in great shape.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Warm water
  • Bleach
  • Mild dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Olive oil

Cleaning and Disinfecting Wooden Cooking Utensils

Step1
Fill your sink with warm water and dish soap. A good ratio is one tablespoon for each gallon of warm water.
Step2
Soak the utensils for at least 10 minutes if they are really dirty. Otherwise, clean the utensils with a soapy sponge.
Step3
Rinse your utensils with warm water to remove all the soapy residue.
Step4
Fill the sink with warm water and add 1/4 cup of bleach for each gallon of water. Allow the utensils to soak for at least five minutes to kill all the bacteria. Do not rise the bleach solution from the utensils.
Step5
After every other sanitation, rub a little olive oil into the wood to prevent drying and splintering.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you notice a foul odor that is not removed after cleaning and sanitizing, throw the utensil away.
