How to Choose Good Cages for Hamsters

It is very important to choose a proper cage for your pet hamster. In addition to being dangerous, choosing the wrong cage can allow your new pet to escape. This guide outlines how to choose a good cage for your pet hamster.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a cage that allows the hamster enough room to exercise. Hamsters get exercise by running around and exploring their surroundings. The cage should also be big enough to contain an exercise wheel and a small box for your hamster to sleep in. Purchase a cage that will accommodate your hamster's full adult size. Talk to your breeder or pet store associate for specific information.

    • 2

Think safety first. If you are purchasing a barred cage make sure the bars are close enough together that your hamster cannot squeeze through or become trapped between them. It is also important to make sure that other household pets such as cats cannot get in between the bars and frighten or injure your hamster. In most cases a glass or plastic cage is the best bet.

    • 3

Make sure that you choose a cage design that will allow you to clean up after your hamster easily. If the cage is easy to clean, you will be more likely to clean it regularly and thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to breed your hamsters or raise many hamsters together, you will have special cage requirements. Consult with your veterinarian or pet store associate.

  • Make sure that your cage is big enough. Being confined in too small an environment will stress your hamster and cause it to become nippy.
