    Lets Keep this Private

  1. Step 1

Set up a password for your work email that will not be easily guessed. Your password should be at least 8 characters long. Include both letters and numbers in your password for your work email.

  2. Step 2

Keep your email account minimized on your screen when you are working on something else. A nosey coworker can easily look over your shoulder and read your work email titles.

  3. Step 3

Place a password on your screen saver for when you must leave your desk during the day at work. This password should be different then your work email password but follow the same conditions for a password as step 1.

  4. Step 4

Place your computer to your screen saver before you walk away from it to keep your emails private. Even 1 minute away from your computer is enough time for someone to snoop in your work email.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change all of your passwords for your work email monthly to keep them private. If you believe someone was standing over your shoulder when you typed in a password--change it right away.
  • Using the names of loved ones is not good for work email passwords. They can easily be guessed by coworkers.
  • Do not write down your passwords for your work email. Someone will find them.

on 10/26/2009 My tip is to not send private email communications at work if they are of a personal nature.

If you absolutely can't avoid it, use a private web email service, not your work email.
