Tai Chi is slow moving, almost meditative form of exercise with origins in Taoism and martial arts. It is used for health, relaxation and self-defense. The swinging motion in Tai Chi is a basic movement performed by the lower half of the body and is often used in combination with defensive hand movements.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight clothing
  1. Step 1

Get into the proper stance, placing your left foot forward and your right foot back. You should be in an almost stride-like stance with your knees slightly bent.

  2. Step 2

Bring your arms up in a fighting position, setting them with the left arm out, slightly bent at the elbow, and your right arm in with the elbow bent and resting close to your ribs.

  3. Step 3

Rock back onto your right foot, rolling your left foot back onto its heel.

  4. Step 4

Rock forward onto your left foot, rolling your right foot onto its toes.

  5. Step 5

Continue to rock backwards and forwards until you’re familiar with the general motion.

  6. Step 6

Once you’ve become accustom to the swinging motion, begin to lift your feet off the ground. As your rock back, lift your left foot slightly off the ground. As you rock forward, lift your right foot slightly off the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the swinging motion gentle and smooth. This should help you maintain a more centered state when in combat.
