make a lasagna bed

Tired of tilling your yard to make a garden bed, only to have it overgrown with grass and weeds in a matter of weeks?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • grass clippings
  • leaves (mowed over)
  • peat moss
  • manure and hummus
  • newspaper
  1. Step 1

First, gather all of your needed items. You will need as many newspapers as you can find. Recycling bins are great for this! You can find peat moss at a local gardening store, for fairly cheap. The hummus and manure may be found at Wal-mart. The grass clipping and leaves...well, ask your neighbors! I often see bags of lawn "waste" out on the corner waiting to be picked up. They usually contain grass clippings and leaves.

  2. Step 2

Next, locate a large container that your newpapers can fit into. You will need to be able to fill the container with water. Then, place the newspapers in the water in order for them to soak it up. After this, lay the newspapers in thick, wet bunches where you want your flower bed to be. Be sure to over lap the edges, because they will serve as a safe weed and grass killer, and also fertilize the soil, as worms enjoy the ink on the papers.

  3. Step 3

Next, put a thick layer of grass clippings and leaves. This layer will eventually decompose, becoming nutritious soil for your plants.

  4. Step 4

Then, soak your peat moss in a container of water. You will need to stir the mixture up so the peat moss absorbs the water. Then, cover the entire area with a layer of peat moss, about an inch and a half deep. The peat moss holds water for your plants, so that you will not have to water as often.

  5. Step 5

After your peat moss comes your manure and hummus, which is very good for you plants' health. Finally, plant your plants, water them, and watch them grow! You will be amazed at how quickly they grow and how healthy they will be!

Tips & Warnings
  • You may do as many layers as you like, just be sure to have some sort of border to keep the lasagna bed in place.
