For large or hilly and uneven lawns, hydroseeding is an option to get grass growing within a week, putting you behind the mower after the fourth week.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to a hydroseeding sprayer (owned or rented
  1. Step 1

Prepare your lawn for seeding. Depending on the size of your lawn and your soil this could potentially include grading, edging, or terracing your lawn.

  2. Step 2

Find a supplier of hydroseeding equipment and supplies that you can rent or buy your sprayer and purchase the seed and mulch mix. Depending on the size of your lawn and the effort you feel that you can comfortably put forward to complete the job you may also want to consider getting an estimate from a professional lawn care firm that specializes in hydroseeding lawns.

  3. Step 3

Seed your lawn. Follow instructions on the proper and safe utilization of your equipment and cover your lawn with the mix in areas where you want to grow grass.

  4. Step 4

Clean up any over spray onto paved patios, sidewalks, driveways, walls and areas where you don't want grass to grow.

  5. Step 5

In 3 to 4 weeks reapply the mix to any areas that failed to grow and begin mowing areas where the grass has become established.

Tips & Warnings
  • Alternately if you just want to take care of spotty parches in your lawn there are several commercially available dry mulch and seed mixes that you can apply in small areas and water with a garden hose. This is substantially less expensive than full hydroseeding and makes more sense for small jobs.
  • Most hydroseeding sprayers are heavy industrial equipment and ought to be treated with care.
