How to Use Video for Sound Editing in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is an excellent utility for editing all sorts of audio. As such, it has many applications; from recording rock bands, to creating sync effects, to its under utilized video editing features. These features create an easy and comfortable environment for anyone who is already comfortable with the program, while still maintaining a very powerful interface for video editing.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pro Tools
  • Video File
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Import the video file you wish to edit. Do this my going to "File" and then "Import Media". Select your video file, and hit "OK". You should then see the audio files that were recorded by your camera pop up into the edit window.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the "Window" toolbar, and click on "Video". A black box should pop up. When you play your audio tracks, this box will run your video file. Therefore, it becomes very easy to sync everything up correctly, as your editing is being done in real time.

  3. Step 3

    Edit your audio to the desired result. This can mean anything from tweaking EQ's, to adding background music, to importing sound effects to play at a specific point in your movie.

  4. Step 4

    Export your completed file. To do this, first make sure that everything is set up the way you want it to play once it is compressed into a single file. Then save the session. Now, click on "File" and then "Export Media". You will then get an option menu. We will need to select "Quick Time File". Now, click on "OK". The session should then begin compress itself into a single file.

  5. Step 5

    Preview the completed file. Go to the directory where you exported your "Quick Time" file, and watch it to make sure that there are no bugs or mistakes. If there are, simply open your saved session, correct the errors, and then export again. Its that easy!
