Having trouble locking or unlocking your door? Worried that you'll have to spend a lot of time and money replacing the whole doorknob and lock? Before you go out and purchase a new knob and lock, try to remove the cylinder itself first. Once removed, you can easily have it repaired, or replace it yourself. This article will guide you through the steps you need to replace your inside cylinder door lock.

    How to Replace Inside Cylinder of Door Lock

  1. Step 1

    Find the tiny release button that should be along the neck of the knob. Insert a small nail into the slot to release the knob.

  2. Step 2

    Next, lift off the plate around the knob (you may have to pry it off or unscrew it).

  3. Step 3

    For this step, you will need to open the door to access the exterior knob. Remove the exterior knob and cylinder by simply pulling it out.

  4. Step 4

    Leaving the door open, unscrew the two screws that are holding the faceplate on and remove it. If you are also replacing the latch system, you should remove that now as well and replace it with the new latch.

  5. Step 5

    Returning to the exterior of the door, slowly guide the knob and cylinder through the hole until you hear it engage with the latch. On the exterior side, install the replacement latch assembly. Replace the faceplate and screw into place.

  6. Step 6

    Return to the inside of the door. Attach the inside cylinder by installing the plate to the part that it protruding. Attach the plate and doorknob, and you are done!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are installing a new latch, be sure to test it to make sure it is positioned correctly before tightening all screws.
