How to Upload New Website Pages to Your Server Using an FTP Client

  1. Step 1

Download and install an FTP client (the software program that allows you to connect to your web server and upload pages to it). These can be found online and many are free, or you can purchase an advanced one from a software retailer. Then open the FTP client on a computer which is connected to the internet.

  2. Step 2

Log in to your web sever by typing your domain name or server location (the website's address) into the FTP client's host field. Then type your user name and password for your website server into the appropriate field on the FTP client. Click "Go" or connect. This will establish the FTP protocol connection. You may now upload pages to your web server.

  3. Step 3

On most FTP clients, your computer's files appear on one side of the screen, and your website's directories and files appear on the other. Locate your computer directory in the FTP server, where your new website pages are located. Then locate the directories on your web server in the FTP client, where you want to new web pages to be located.

  4. Step 4

To upload new website pages from your computer, drag and drop the files from your computer directories into the proper directories in your web server on the FTP client. The files should immediately start to upload from your computer to the web server.

  5. Step 5

Always confirm that the files have uploaded successfully. Most FTP clients will display the progress of your uploads, and they will tell you when the file has been uploaded. Just to be certain, open the directory in the web server field on the FTP client, and make sure that the file is there.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many free FTP clients will only allow you to upload a few files at a time, and they can be slow. For better performance, consider purchasing an advanced version of the FTP client for better performance, if you are going to be uploading a lot of pages.
  • Set up a "quick connect" connection to your website, to save time. There should be an option that allows this on your FTP client.
  • You can also drag and drop files directly from your computer directories or your desktop, into the FTP client. Just left click and drag the files over the web directory.
  • Opening an FTP connection is a secure connection, but you should take precautions to ensure your computer or files are not viewed or corrupted.
  • Once you upload a file to your web server it is live, so be sure you are uploading the proper files, and always double check file names.
