We've all struggled with a door lock that sticks, or is too loose. However, this doesn't mean you have to replace the entire doorknob and locking system! Often the problem can be fixed by just removing the lock cylinder. This article will guide you through the steps you need to replace your outside cylinder door lock.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

How to Replace Outside Cylinder of Door Lock

  1. Step 1

Open the door and remove the faceplate located on the inside of the door. It is usually fastened with two screws.

  2. Step 2

Beneath the faceplate, you will see another screw. Loosen this screw about 5 turns, but DO NOT remove it.

  3. Step 3

Insert your key into the lock and use it to unscrew the cylinder. If this is too difficult, loosen the screw a few more turns and try again.

  4. Step 4

Install the new or repaired cylinder by screwing it back into the lock case. Test the lock to make sure the bolt operates smoothly.

  5. Step 5

Finally, re-tighten the screw that you had previously loosened, and replace the faceplate.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the screw is difficult to loosen with your key, you can also squirt penetrating oil around the cylinder, or use channel-lock pliers. Wrapping the pliers with duct tabe will help protect your lock and door from scratches.
