How to Cleanse Crystals and Precious Stones
Cleansing is an important part of working with crystals and other precious stones. To cleanse the stones takes away past influences and other energies the stones may have picked up along the way. Common forms of cleansing include burying the stones for a period of time, placing the stones in direct sunlight and placing the stones in natural running water for a period of time. For the purpose of this How To, I will cover two basic ways by which you can cleanse your crystals and other precious stones.
Things You'll Need
- Access to running water such as a stream, or small creek
- Stones and/or crystals to be cleansed
- Small muslin bag with a drawstring
- Piece of square cloth, or a natural container
- Sunlight
- An area outside where the stones will not be disturbed

Cleansing Crystals and Precious Stones with the Element of Water
-
1
Find a small creek or stream where you know that neither you nor the stones will be disturbed. It is best to start this cleansing in the early morning hours near sunrise. If this is on your property or near your home, awesome. However, if it is private property, make sure that you seek permission from the owner.
-
2
Place the stones in the small muslin bag and secure the top with the drawstring.
-
-
3
Place the bag in deep enough running water so that the water flows over the submerged bag. Do not place the stones in an area of water that is stagnant. Secure the bag by using the drawstring to tie it to a (natural) weighted object--such as a stone--or large branch.
-
4
Leave the stones submerged in the running water overnight (24 hours). The running water will wash away any impurities or negative energies.
-
5
After retrieving the stones from the water, promptly remove them from the bag and dry them off and place them in a dry piece of cloth, or other natural container.
Cleansing Crystals and Precious Stones Using the Element of Fire (the Sun)
-
6
Gather the crystals and stones that you wish to cleanse.
-
7
On a sunny day (in the early morning), find a place outside where you can place the stones where they will not be disturbed by prying fingers or curious children. A window sill, outside shelf or ledge works great.
-
8
Place the stones in the sun and leave them for the day.
-
9
Go outside and gather up the stones at sundown and bring them into the house. Generally, by handling the stones you will know whether or not they need to spend more time in the sun. If you pick up one of the stones and it still feels a bit "weighted" or "fuzzy" place the stone outside again on the next sunny day. Leave it to soak up the rays until it is light and pure!

Tips & Warnings
When using the sun for cleansing, you may leave the stones out in the sun for up to a week. Just be sure to bring the stones in the house at the end of each day.
