Holding a Thomas the Train Party
-
1
Make and send the invitations. Of course you can buy ready-made Thomas invitations, but your child will enjoy helping you to create personalized invitations. Using a plain white card, draw train tracks on the front of the card. On the inside write, “Follow the tracks to (child’s name) house on (date and time) for a Thomas the Train party.” Let your child attach train stickers to the card and the envelope.

2
Make a “Attach the #1 to Thomas” game. On the Thomas and friends site, print out the coloring sheet showing Thomas alone. Make a poster-sized copy of the coloring sheet. In addition, make various colored '1s' out of construction paper, one for each guest. Before the party, let your children color the poster, if they wish. During the party, one at a time, attach a piece of tape to each #1, blindfold each child who will then try to tape the #1 to the appropriate spot.

3
Rent a short Thomas the Train DVD from the library. Give children some of the other coloring sheets from the site, and let them color while watching the show.

4
Create a Sir Topham Hat from a tube of black construction paper rolled so that it will fit a child’s head. Tape it together and then cut some one-inch slits at the bottom. Make a brim by gluing black construction paper onto cardboard and cutting to the appropriate size. Attach the top of the hat to the brim by making tabs near the slits. Play “Sir Topham Hat Says” (a variation on Simon Says) by giving children turns to play the role of Sir Topham and wear his hat as they give the directions.

5
Prepare the refreshments. An easily decorated cake can be produced by baking a sheet cake in a 9” x 13” (or larger) pan. Frost with vanilla frosting and add the adorable Thomas cake topper for sale on the site. Alternately, you might purchase a train engine shaped cookie cutter, bake cookies in that shape, frost it and add frosted and decorated graham cracker “cars” to the engine you put at each child’s place.
