Yes, you can spend a fortune on entertainment in New York City. Or you can be savvy enough to enjoy wonderful music without putting out a cent. And even if you have to pop two bucks to ride the subway to get there, you’ll have a good chance of being entertained by an underground street musician along the way.

    Finding Free Music in New York City

  1. Step 1

    Visit www.timeout.com/newyork/section/music for a comprehensive look at what New York offers in the way of free musical events. Although you will find that the majority of free events occur during the warmer months, you’ll find events for every month of the year.

  2. Step 2

    Make a selection of musical events when you take a look at www.nycvisit.com/calendar/index, a site that allows you to put in a particular date and gives you events happening on that day—including ones with no admission charge.

  3. Step 3

    Find free concerts at the famed Julliard School of Music by checking their site: www.julliard.edu/asp/calendar.

  4. Step 4

    Check out New York churches, where a variety of performers often play for the congregation and guests at free concerts throughout the year.

    Look to Rockefeller Center for music events at Christmastime, including a concert featuring 500 tuba players. www.rockefellercenter.com
