Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Various grass
  • Picket fence
  • Outdoor wood primer
  • White paint
  • Garden arbor

How to Add Cottage Style to Your Garden

Step1
Visit your local landscape supply or home improvement garden center. Look for various grasses that you can plant in clusters within your landscape. Grasses add a touch of cottage style to the hidden corners of your garden.
Step2
Purchase one section of wood picket fence. Paint the fence with an outdoor primer, then a coat of white paint. White picket fences are typical in cottage style. Place the picket fence along a garden border or in back of a planter for a cottage accent. As the paint ages and wears, the true cottage style of this piece will emerge.
Step3
Purchase a garden lattice or arbor at your local home improvement store. Place the arbor flanking a walkway or entrance to your backyard. Plant a climbing vine that will grow up the lattice work
Step4
Start collecting mismatched lawn furniture such as chairs and tables from yard sales. Mixing various styles of furniture is a popular style technique of the cottage look. Painting the furniture in different colors will also add interest.
